Victor V. Kafarov

Doctor of Science in Chemistry, Professor, Full Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Pioneer of Russian cybernetics in chemical engineering

Graduated from Kazan State Chemical Technological Institute n. a. S.M. Kirov in 1938

In 1944-1995, Professor Kafarov worked at D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia, where in 1960 he founded the Department of Cybernetics of Chemical Technological Processes. In 1989, he became the Chief Editor of the international journal “Theoretical Foundations of Chemical Technology.” He also was an expert of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.
Professor Kafarov contributed greatly to the development of Kazan Chemical Technological Institute by providing methodological and organizational support for teaching and research. He is one of the founders of the Department of Chemical Cybernetics at the University.
In 1982, he was awarded the USSR State Prize. He also holds the Order of Lenin (1984) and was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor twice (1967, 1974).


Zinovy P. Pak

Doctor of Science in Chemistry, Professor, Russian Scientist and public official

CEO and General Designer of the Federal Center for Dual Technologies “Soyuz” (1988–1996), Minister of Defence Industry of the Russian Federation (1996–1997), General Director of the Russian Munitions Agency (1999–2003), Member of the Advisory Board of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. A pioneer in the field of chemistry and manufacturing of mixed solid rocket fuels, creator of unique technologies for rare fuels use, including the fuels for “Topol-M” intercontinental strategic missiles.
Author of more than 500 academic papers and 170 inventions.
Laureate of the USSR State Prize (1980) and the Lenin Prize (1984) for achievements in the development and implementation of new types of special equipment, he was also awarded the Order of Honour (1999).




Yuri A. Bespalov

Soviet and Russian Public Official

Graduated from Kazan State Chemical Technological Institute n. a. S.M. Kirov in 1961.

Yuri A. Bespalov was the USSR Minister of Chemical Industry (1986-1989), Chairman of the State Committee for Inventions and Discoveries, Presidium Member of the Committee on Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR in the Field of Science and Technology (1989-1991), Minister of Industry of the Russian Federation (1996-1997), President of Rosneft Oil Company (1997-1998).
Yuri A. Bespalov is a laureate of the USSR State Prize, he was also awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour.


Nikolai V. Lemaev

Doctor of Science in Engineering
Public official, prominent figure of the chemical industry

Doctor Lemaev was the first General Director of PJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” (1977–1985), Minister of Oil Refining and Petrochemical Industry of the USSR (1985–1989), Minister of Chemical and Oil Refining Industry of the USSR (1989–1990).
A branch of Kazan Chemical Technological Institute was established in Nizhnekamsk due in no small part to the personal efforts of Doctor Lemaev. He also greatly contributed to the University being equipped with the state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, which allowed for advanced scientific developments in the field of polymer chemistry.
Hero of Socialist Labour (1980), Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1985), Honoured Petrochemist of the USSR (1979), Honoured Inventor of the RSFSR (1982). Doctor Lemaev was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1966), the Order of Lenin (1971), the Order of the October Revolution (1974), the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland,” IV Class (2000).


Nikolay K. Yegorov

Doctor of Science in Engineering, Professor
Prominent Russian scientist in the field of special technical chemistry

Based on the substances developed by Dr. Yegorov, a new class of materials (light stabilized film materials with an adjustable life) was created. Dr. Yegorov was one of the first to study the methods of using organometallic (ferrocene) and spinel modifiers for burning solid fuels, which have been introduced into most rocket weapons. He is an author of more than 350 academic papers, as well as 200 inventions and patents.
Nikolay K. Yegorov is an Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1982), Honoured Inventor of the RSFSR (1971), laureate of the USSR State Prize (1979), awardee of the Order of the Red Star (1984).





Leiv Kristen Sydnes

Professor of the University of Bergen

Professor Sydnes occupied the positions of Chairman of the Council of European Chemical Communities, President and Vice President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). He is an editorial board member of such scientific journals as “Acta Chemica Scandinavica,” “Pure and Applied Chemistry,” “Journal of Chemists and Chemical Engineers” and an author of more than 150 academic papers.
Research interests: cyclopropane chemistry, photochemistry, development of synthetic methodology, production of biologically active molecules.
Professor Sydnes visited KNRTU on several occasions to participate in scientific forums and conferences. He was one of the initiators of the cooperation agreement between KNRTU and the University of Bergen.
He received the Award of the University of Oslo and the Medal of the Federation of European Chemical Societies (FECS).




Pavel D. Sarkisov

Doctor of Science in Engineering, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences
Russian chemist, Expert in Physical Chemistry of Silicate and High-melting Point Materials

Dr. Sarkisov was the Rector of the D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (1985-2005). He also occupied the positions of Chairman of the Russian Chemical Society n.a. D.I. Mendeleev, Chairman of the council of the Russian Rectors' Union.
Dr. Sarkisov is the founder of a new prospect in the field of industrial by-products. He set out the fundamental principles and regular patterns of directional crystallization of vitreous materials and pyroceramics with tailor-made properties. Numerous technologies of producing pyroceramics for construction, decorative and special purposes; processing slag glass ceramics and technical pyroceramics for mechanic engineering, aviation, rocketry and other fields were developed under his guidance.
Dr. Sarkisov is a co-author of 700 academic papers as well as of 130 inventions and patents.
Twice he received the Russian Federation State Prize (2002, 2006), he was also awarded the Order of Friendship (1996), the Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1986) and the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland”, IV class (2003).


Edward Gzhiva

Professor of the Warsaw University of Technology
Polish politician and chemist, expert in the field of chemistry and technology of Polymers

Between 1951 and 1955, Edward Gzhiva was enrolled at KNRTU.
He was the Head of the Institute of Heavy Organic Synthesis "Blachownia" between 1966 and 1972. Later he was the Head of the Institute of Industrial Chemistry. From 1982 to 1987, he has been the Minister of Chemical Industry of Poland. Professor Gzhiva has developed and implemented innovative high-performance technologies to process dimethyl phthalate, polyvinylchloride and artificial rubbers. He published over 100 academic papers and registered 180 patents.
For many years, Professor Gzhiva maintained close ties with KNRTU. He participated in science events and anniversaries, gave lectures and shared his expertise with KNRTU faculty and workers of Kazan industrial enterprises.
He was conferred four national awards of the Republic of Poland, awarded Commander's Cross and Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Resituta.


Ole Hassager

Professor Emeritus of the Technical University of Denmark

Professor Hassager is the author of over 200 academic papers. He is also a member of editorial boards of such scientific journals as «Rheologica Acta» and «Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics».
Research interests: rheology and complex fluids structure, the correlation between molecular architecture and macroscopic properties, extensional rheology and computational mechanics of fluids.
Professor Hassager was conferred the Weissenberg Award of the European Society of Rheology and the Nordic Rheology awards of the Scandinavian Rheology Society. He was also awarded the STATOIL awards for research in the field of technology and the ATV Elastyrenprisen award.




Bai Chunli

Professor
President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2011-2020)
Honorary President of the 8th Presidium of the Chinese Academy of Sciences


Bai Chunli is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Australian Academy of Sciences, the Indian Academy of Sciences, the German Academy of Sciences, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, an Honorary Member of the Royal Chemical Society and the Chemical Society of Japan.
Research interests: structure and properties of polymer catalysts, X-ray crystallography of organic compounds, molecular mechanics.
KNRTU was the first Russian university to sign a Memorandum of Cooperation (2012) with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Bai Chunli personally initiated the visit of the KNRTU delegation to China.
Professor Bai Chunli has a significant amount of published scientific articles and has received over twenty prestigious awards for outstanding achievements in science, including the UNESCO medal “For Contribution to the Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.”


Jung Il Jin

Professor
President of the Korean Federation for Science and Technology Societies

Jung Il Jin is a member of the Korean Academy of Sciences and the Royal Chemical Society (Great Britain), visiting Professor at the University of Massachusetts (USA) and Cambridge University (Great Britain). He is also an author of over 400 research papers on liquid-crystal and conjugated polymers and properties of DNA materials.
Over the years, Professor Jung-Il Jin headed the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the Federation of Asian Polymer Societies (FAPS), the Korean Chemical Society, and the Polymer Society of Korea.
Professor Jung-Il Jin significantly contributed to signing the cooperation agreement between KNRTU and Korea University.
He was awarded the Korea Science Award 1st Class for outstanding contribution to science.




Peter William Atkins

English chemist and Science Popularizer

Throughout his career, Peter Atkins held the position of Chemistry Professor at Oxford University, was a member of the Council of the Royal Society and the Chairman of the Davy-Faraday research laboratory committee. He also was the founding IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) Committee Chairman and the Chairman of the Royal Society of Chemistry Committee.
His area of scientific expertise lies in physical chemistry with a focus on theoretical chemistry. Dr. Atkins is a prolific author of more than 75 books, including widely known university chemistry textbooks including Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Molecular Quantum Mechanics.
Dr. Atkins has given several public lectures at scientific conferences and forums held at KNRTU.
Dr. Atkins received numerous awards, including a Royal Society of Chemistry Medal, an award of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland, awards of American Chemical Society and others.


Alexander A. Berlin

Doctor of Science in Chemistry, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Russian chemist, a pioneer in the field of chemical polymer physics
Since 1963, Alexander A. Berlin has been working at the Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics. Currently he is the Chief Academic Officer of the institute.
Academician Berlin conducted fundamental research on kinetics, thermodynamics and mechanisms of polymerization processes, macro kinetics of ultrafast chemical processes, destruction and combustion of polymer materials, and mechanisms of destruction and strength of polymers, reinforced and filled composite materials. He created the theory of macro kinetics of fast reactions in turbulent flows. He discovered a new phenomenon of the polymer matrix's dispersion under the action of microexplosions of capsules with a low boiling superheated flame retardant. Alexander A. Berlin also developed ways to reduce the flammability of polymers and introduced new low-flammability polymeric materials.
Alexander A. Berlin significantly contributed development and implementation of new resource- and energy-saving technologies. These technologies are now used to produce isoprene and divinyl styrene rubbers, isobutylene and methyl ethyl ketone, chloroethyl and dichloroethane.
For many years, Academician Berlin has been cooperating closely with the scientists from the KNRTU Institute of Polymers and giving public lectures. He is also a member of the organizing committees of major international conferences on polymer chemistry held at Kazan Technological University. Alexander A. Berlin is the author of more than 700 academic papers, has over 100 registered patents and copyright certificates.
He received the Russian Federation State Prize, the Republic of Tatarstan State Prize and was awarded the Order of Friendship.


Oleg L. Figovsky

Doctor of Science in Engineering, Academician of EAS, RAE and RAACS
Russian inventor, expert in the field of new composite materials

Over the years, Dr. Figovsky was the Director of Science at the “Polymate” International Nanotechnology Research Center (Israel), Director for Development of “Nanotech Industries” (USA), President of the Israeli Association of Inventors, Editor-in-Chief of such scientific journals as “Scientific Israel – Technological Advantages” and “Resent Patents on Corrosion Science.”
Research interests: nanocomposites and nanocoatings production technologies. Figovsky is the author of more than 500 inventions and 600 scientific papers, including 20 monographs.
He was awarded the IENA-98 (Germany, 1998) and IFIA (Hungary, 2006) Medals, the Gold Angel Prize as well as the NASA Nanotech Briefs Award (USA, 2007) and the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award (USA, 2017). In 2016, Academician Figovsky was awarded the Order of Engineering Glory (Russia) for active cooperation in solving interstate problems impeding the development of scientific and engineering activities and for his outstanding success in development and implementation of new technologies.


Shuzo Kaihori


Over the years, Mr. Kaihori has held the position of the CEO, Director General, Chairman of the Board and President of Yokogawa Electric – one of the world's largest industrial automation equipment manufacturers. The company offers enterprises complete plug-and-produce solutions for automation, providing the full range of services required to implement new equipment, as well as its warranty and post-warranty support.
"Yokogawa Electric Corporation" is an active partner of the Republic of Tatarstan. Yokogawa distributed control systems and emergency protection systems are installed in almost all major chemical and petrochemical plants of the republic.
Shuzo Kaihori personally contributed to the development of cooperation between KNRTU and Yokogawa Electric Corporation. In 2011, a unique laboratory in automation and process control systems equipped with Yokogawa hardware and software was launched at the University.



Yuri M. Mikhailov

Doctor of Science in Engineering, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Russian chemist, expert in the field of materials science and physical chemistry of energy condensed systems

Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council, Deputy Chairman of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation. Chairman of the Russian Academy of Sciences for research in the field of defence, the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on combustion and explosion, the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences in chemistry, technology, and energy condensed systems. Editor-in-chief of the scientific and technical journals "Ammunition and Special Chemistry," "Ammunition and High-Energy Condensed Systems," "Bulletin of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation".
Research interests: technology (both fundamental materials science and production technology, and development of industrial production) of energy condensed systems, such as gunpowder and other explosive materials, solid rocket fuels. He is the author of more than 800 scientific papers and 270 patents. Dr. Mikhailov is a prominent figure of the defenсe industry complex. Under his scientific and organizational leadership, several federal target programs in the field of ammunition and special chemistry were implemented; development of new promising energy components was launched and processing plants created; measures were taken to restore the neglected domestic production of unique energy components, federal-state enterprises in ammunition and special chemistry industry were established.
Academician Mikhailov has close and longstanding scientific ties with KNRTU. He headed the KNRTU Dissertation Council on special chemistry and special technologies for a long time, and since 2014 he has been Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University.


Datuk Sun Tin Ku

Professor of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry

Over the years of his career, Fred held positions of the President of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry, President of the Malaysian Scientific Association, President and Coordinator of the Malaysian Federation of Asian Chemical Societies (FACS), member of the IUPAC within the framework of the Committee on Chemical Research Applied to World Needs.
Research Interests: chemistry, chemical education, environmental chemistry. Author of more than 100 academic papers.
Dr. Datuk Sun Ting Ku has been taking an active part in major academic projects held by KNRTU. Among over things, he was one of the key speakers of the 42nd IGIP International Symposium on engineering education (Kazan, KNRTU, 2013) and the 67th Congress of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies Executive Committee (Kazan, KNRTU, 2015).



Frederik Paulsen

Swedish scientist, entrepreneur and philanthropist

Chairman of Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in Lausanne, acknowledged scientist and polar explorer, philanthropist and diplomat.
In Russia, Dr. Paulsen is mainly known as a polar explorer and member of the Russian Geographical Society Board. He was the first man to reach the eight poles, having accomplished an expedition to the South Pole in January 2013.
Many countries highly appreciate Dr. Paulsen's activities: he is a holder of an order of the Legion of Honour (France), the Order of the Dannebrog (Denmark), the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, The Order of the Druk Gyalpo (Bhutan) and the Order of Friendship (the Russian Federation).



Michael Johannes Dröscher

German chemist, professor

Over the years, Michael Dröscher chaired the special issue group on innovation of CEFIC, held the post of Chairman of the German Chemical Industry association (VCI), Chairman of the IUPAC Committee, President of the German Chemical Society (GDCh). Since 2015, he has occupied the Secretary-General position of the Society of German Naturalists and Physicians.

Fields of research and business interests:
- innovations in the chemical industry;
- innovation management;
- synthesis, the study of crystalline polymers architecture and properties;
- recycling of polymer waste.

Professor Dröscher initiated numerous fruitful contacts of KNRTU with German universities and industrial enterprises. He also visited the university with several lectures on the prospects for developing the world and European petrochemistry.


Takashi Nishijima

President, CEO of Yokogawa Electric Corporation

During his almost 40-year career at Yokogawa Electric Corporation, Takashi Nishijima has made his way to the key position in the leading international Engineering Corporation.
The longstanding cooperation between KNRTU and the world-known corporation develops in part within the Memorandum of Cooperation signed by the President of Tatarstan and the Head of Yokogawa Electric Corporation. KNRTU highly appreciates the collaboration with the internationally acclaimed leader in measurement equipment and industrial automation.
The corporation has founded three laboratories in industrial processes; one of them is in the boarding school for talented children with advanced study of Chemistry, another one is operating at Nizhnekamsk Chemical Technical Institute. Staff members of the corporation are actively involved in the study process and encourage bright students. For many years Takashi Nishijima and company representatives have presented their scientific reports at many conferences held at KNRTU.


Ignacio E. Grossmann

Dean-Professor of Carnegie Mellon University, Chemical Engineering Department

Ignacio E. Grossmann is one of the world's leading scientists in developing modern problem statements and methods of mathematical programming in the field of chemical technology.
Professor Grossmann received 23 awards in the field of computer modeling and optimization of chemical-technological processes. He is on the list of 100 Chemical Engineers of the Modern Era, according to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).
In 2013, Ignacio E. Grossmann was a key speaker of the International Scientific School "Computer Modeling and Optimization in Chemical Technology", held at KNRTU, and in 2016 he headed the KNRTU Organizing Committee of the Russian-American school-conference in the field of chemical engineering processes and systems modelling and optimization.



Gennadiy V. Sakovich

Doctor of Science in Engineering, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences
Outstanding Russian chemist, Hero of Socialist Labour

Doctor Sakovich is an acknowledged expert in topochemistry. His expertise lies in developing efficient solid propellants for Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles.
Between 1984 and 1997, Dr. Sakovich was the CEO of Altai Research and Production Center. In 2001-2006 he headed the Institute for Problems of Chemical and Energetic Technologies of the Siberian Branch оf the Russian Academy of Sciences. Currently, he is the Honorary Director of Altai Research and Production Center and Research Advisor for the Institute for Problems of Chemical and Energetic Technologies of the Siberian Branch оf the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Sakovich participated in many major scientific conferences and forums held at KNRTU. He often was the academic advisor and Ph.D. defenses opponent in KNRTU Council on Special Chemistry and Unique Technologies.
Dr. Sakovich was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1966); twice awarded the Order of Lenin (1976,1990); Order “For Merit to the Fatherland”, II Class. He was Laureate of the USSR State Prize (1970), the Lenin Prize (1984) and the Russian Federation State Prize (1994).


Phillip Albert Sanger

Doctor of Engineering, Professor at Purdue University

Doctor Phillip A. Sanger is an American physics engineer, a specialist in industry of new technologies development, launching and commercialization, as well as in engineering pedagogy. In his scientific and pedagogical activities Phillip Sanger mainly focuses on the process of engineers training, which aims not only at developing high professional but project thinking and team building skills.
As a specialist in the field of engineers training Phillip Sanger has been cooperating actively with KNRTU for many years. He is an annual participant of “Synergy” international Research-to-Practice online Conference and one of its plenary sessions keynote speaker.
Dr. Sanger has co-authored a number of research papers on engineering pedagogy with KNRTU scholars. During many years Phillip Sanger has been working at KNRTU as a visiting professor under “Algarysh” Grant program of the Republic of Tatarstan government. He gives classes to KNRTU undergraduates, participates in the work of «TechnoLeadeR» Secondary Professional Education School.


Vladimir N. Strelnikov

Doctor of Science in Engineering, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS)
Russian scientist, specialist in the field of creating tailored materials

Professor Strelnikov is the Director of RAS Ural Branch Institute of Technical Chemistry, presidium member of RAS Ural Branch Perm Scientific Centre, The President of Chemistry and Material Science Board of RAS Ural Branch Perm Scientific Centre.
The key research area of Professor Strelnikov is the creation of scientific basis for the construction of polymer composite materials, including high-energy condensed systems and nanomaterials. For the last few years he has been engaged in fundamental research on the creation of new generation high-energy polymer systems providing high ballistic- and energy performance of products in a wide temperature range.
Professor Strelnikov and KNRTU have been maintaining productive collaborative partnership for a long time. He is the permanent participant of university’s scientific conferences and forums on technical chemistry and the author of more than 250 scientific papers, including 5 monographs and 18 inventions.
