KNRTU Starting a New Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module “EU Practices in Green Textiles: from Focused Education to Circular Economy”

09.03.2022

KNRTU is going to implement a Jean Monnet Module “EU Practices in Green Textiles: from Focused Education to Circular Economy”, the module application got in the list of the 2021 Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Call winners. The academics from the Department of Technology of Chemical and Natural Fibers and Articles in cooperation with Department of Foreign Languages for Professional Communication will run the grant. The module leader is Dr. Irina Krasina, the team also includes Dr. Julia Ziyatdinova, Dr. Alina Ibatullina and Dr. Veronika Bronskaya. Before the start of the spring term, the module team had a kick-off meeting to discuss all the issues related to grant implementation, such as courses, learning outcomes, and all activities for the first year.
The grant period is three years, and, during this period, the departments will introduce 4 new courses for freshmen in Textile Engineering, including EU Green Deal and Circular Economy, EU Textile Strategy, EU Environmentally Friendly Chemical Technologies, Cultural Dimensions of EU Sustainable Development. As a result, a new study plan for a Bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering will be developed and approved.
The grant also addresses other stakeholders in textile engineering with round tables for representatives of local textile businesses on EU green deal, textile strategy and circular economy; contests on EU standards for environmentally friendly chemical technologies in producing textiles for schoolchildren; and spreading information in the research community through participation in research conferences on this topic with reports co-authored by the students.
The module will be interesting for all stakeholders because textile industry is a priority sector for embracing and promoting sustainability due to its high use of resources and impact on environment. Although textiles are not on top of the global ecological agenda as compared with carbon footprint or global warming, they are among the worst pressure categories in these effects. The European Commission includes the EU Textile Strategy into the Circular Economy Action Plan thus setting the goals for the years to come. Expertise in developing green textile technologies, however, comes from excellent academics and greening initiatives in European universities.
The module goes within the ‘European Interdisciplinary Studies’ topic as it includes cross-cultural, technological and environmental issues in the EU for engineering Bachelor’s degree programs.
