On 16 May, at the conference of employees and students of KNRTU, Yury Kazakov, the Acting Rector of the university was elected as Rector. The majority of delegates voted in favor of his candidacy by secret ballot.

A quorum of 276 out of 290 delegates, representing university structures and students, had registered by the start of the event.

Professor Villiam Barabanov, Chairman of the Commission for the Election of Rector, opened the conference in the Round Hall of Building A. He announced that the date of the conference had been set in accordance with the decision of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and clarified procedural issues. By the time the conference began, there were two candidates for the position of Rector: Yury Kazakov, Acting Rector, and Ildar Akhmetov, Director of KNRTU NCTI. The third candidate, Ruslan Safin, Acting-Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, withdrew his candidacy the day before.

Among the guests representing authorities, educational institutions and industrial enterprises of the Republic were Aide to the Rais of Tatarstan Albert Gilmutdinov, Chairman of the Council of the Association for the Promotion of Digital Development Rifkat Minnikhanov, Chairman of the Council of Rectors of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rector of Kazan Federal University Lenar Safin, CEO of Kazanorgsintez Airat Safin, Director General of Kazan State Powder Plant Alexander Livshits, Director General of Tatneftekhiminvest-Holding Rafinat Yarullin, Director General of JSC Ammoni Yuri Razbezhkin, Director General of Gazprom Transgaz Kazan, Rustem Usmanov, Director General of Gazprom Transgaz Kazan, and Radmir Belyaev, Head of the Mendeleevsky District of the Republic of Tatarstan.

Delegates expressed their support for each of the candidates, highlighting the positive aspects of both of them, their achievements in leadership positions, and their wishes for the future rector.

After discussion of the candidates, a secret ballot was held. The results were announced by the counting commission: the number of invalid ballots was 18; 272 ballots were found in the ballot box, of which 39 were invalid; 34 votes were for Ildar Akhmetov and 199 for Yury Kazakov.

“Consider Yury Kazakov elected to the position of Rector”, – declared the decision of the conference Villiam Barabanov.

“We have formed a target image of the university and have understood what needs to be done staff-wise, organisationally and materially, but the most important thing is the moral and ethical values that would be shared by the whole team. This would allow us to unite, achieving the desired results faster and more effectively” – emphasised Yury Kazakov.
