KNRTU SCIENTISTS PUBLISHED FIRST TEXTBOOK IN RUSSIA ON MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR IMPROVING MEDICAL INSTRUMENTS

19.06.2026

The textbook "Materials for Medical Applications and Methods of Improving the Functional and Operational Properties of Medical Instruments" was published. It was prepared by a group of researchers and manufacturers under the supervision of the Director of the Institute of Polymers at KNRTU, the Head of the Department of Medical Engineering, Ildar Musin. The textbook has the approval of the Federal State Educational Standard for the field of "Photonics, Instrumentation, Optical and Biotechnical Systems and Technologies".

The textbook, intended for bachelors and masters of the "Biotechnical Systems and Technologies" field of study, covers issues related to the classification and properties of medical materials, methods of their heat treatment, welding, and soldering, as well as the use of appropriate equipment. The book also explores the possibilities of improving the functional and operational properties of medical instruments.

It is worth noting that this is the first textbook of its kind. The material is presented in detail and sequentially, using an easy-to-understand language, with a large number of numerical and tabular data, illustrations, and diagrams. For example, the reader will find information on the specific features of heat treatment of carbon and stainless steels used in the production of medical instruments, as well as information on how the structure and properties of steels change during quenching, tempering, aging, phase recrystallization annealing, recrystallization and pre-recrystallization annealing, homogenization, stress reduction annealing, thermomechanical, chemical-thermal, and other types of heat treatment.

"We are confident that our textbook will be in demand not only by students of the Biotechnical Systems and Technologies field, but also by specialists from specialized enterprises," said Ildar Musin.

This quality of presentation was achieved through the careful selection of the author team, which included both scientists and practical production specialists. It was crucial that engineers Viktor Veinov, Viktor Meshcheryakov, Damir Khakimov, and Stanislav Agafetov, employees of the Kazan company PTO Medtekhnika, which produces various types of medical instruments used in traumatology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, and cardiovascular surgery, actively participated in the creation of the textbook. The participation of engineers from real production facilities in the project continues the trend of modernizing educational programs in collaboration with leading industry enterprises, which is being implemented at KNRTU.

The level of the publication is also evidenced by the participation of an authoritative specialist in the field of medical engineering, Professor Zafar Yuldashev, Head of the Department of Biotechnical Systems at SPbGETU "LETI", in its compilation.

The book was published by the Russian publishing house "Thin Science-Intensive Technologies," which specializes in producing educational literature for students in engineering and technical fields.
