Developing Soft Skills through Foreign Language Course for Doctoral Students (In Russian)

Modern Problems of Science and Education, #5, 2019, pp. 57.

https://www.elibrary.ru/item.asp?id=41258155

The transition to a three-level education system in Russia has led to significant changes in the structure and content of doctoral educational programs. One of the current problems of Russian doctoral education is creating new content for existing disciplines and introducing new teaching methods in the educational process aimed at fostering solid and soft skills of doctoral students, thereby developing the scientific and personal skills of future scientists. This paper presents Foreign Language Course developed for doctoral program in Chemical Sciences at Kazan National Research Technological University. Based on the analysis of foreign and Russian literature, the main soft skills necessary for the future scientific and professional career of a doctoral student were identified. One of which is the communicative skill necessary for writing scientific papers and abstracts for foreign journals and conferences, making presentations and reports in a foreign language, applying for international grants and fruitful working in interdisciplinary and international teams. To develop these skills the author proposes new content of Foreign Language Course consisting of three modules: professionally focused foreign language; academic writing; presentation skills.

Soft Skills Development during Foreign Language Training of Doctoral Students. (In Russian)

Vestnik of Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod. Series: Social Sciences, # 4 (56), 2019, pp. 275-279.

Soft skills are considered essential for scientific and professional success, especially in close interaction between science and business. Excellent research alone is no longer enough. To establish a reputation in academia, today's researchers must also be able to lead project teams, moderate discussions, and communicate their knowledge clearly and persuasively. That is why soft skills such as communication, leadership, and moderation are more important than ever before in scientific professions. The article provides a list of relevant soft skills, describes their role in the professional development of post-graduate students and demonstrates the experience of Brunel University London that was gained during an internship with the cofunding of the EU Erasmus+ program. The capacity of the Russian education system to introduce new forms of work for the development of soft skills and, as a result, to increase the general preparedness of postgraduate students for a successful scientific and professional career is clarified. The role of foreign language training in the development of soft skills during postgraduate studies is substantiated. The possibilities and prospects of using new forms of work within the frame-work of foreign-language training of postgraduate students are described, taking into account foreign experience and the principles of internationalization of education.

Foreign Language Course for Doctoral Students at Technological University.

European Proceedings of Social and Behavioural Sciences. 2022, vol 124, pp. 759-765.

https://www.europeanproceedings.com/article/10.15405/epsbs.2022.02.94

The paper presents the experience of Kazan National Research Technological University in developing new Foreign Language Course content for doctoral students conducting research in the field of Chemistry and Engineering. Nowadays, doctoral education aims at training researchers who will possess both hard and soft skills required for solving complex scientific tasks at Russian and international levels. One of the problems of engineering education in Russian universities is the lack of special courses providing soft skills. Therefore, we need to update the content of the existing courses to meet the requirements of the new scientific generation. The authors propose the new content of the English language course developed according to the analysis of the best international practices in developing doctoral programs. The course focuses on developing such communicative skills as academic writing and speaking. These skills are essential for successful dissemination of research results by doctoral students. The interdisciplinary approach, based on the cooperation of research supervisors of doctoral students and professors from the Department of Foreign Languages for Professional Communication, was applied to combine the content of special research courses and the Foreign Language Course. Such cooperation resulted in individual approach to training doctoral students in accordance with their specific research.

Prospects of Using Best European Practices for Modernizing Doctoral Education in Russia.

European Proceedings of Social and Behavioural Sciences. 2022, vol.1, pp. 766-772.

Throughout its history, doctoral education has always experienced significant changes due to arising challenges and shifts in higher education. Due to the changes in academic and non-academic career opportunities for doctoral school graduates, there is a growing need for the changes in the pathways towards a doctoral degree. Doctoral education in Russia is currently going through the reformation process with changes in the state educational standards and cancellation of state accreditation procedures. Recent European experience of doctoral education reforms can help Russian universities in shaping the new infrastructure and contents of PhD studies. The paper aims at studying the best European practices of modernizing doctoral education and developing possible solutions for the Russian universities in reformation of their doctoral schools. The authors analyze the current state and trends in EU doctoral education based on recent research publications, reports of European Universities Association and involved observation in the framework of Erasmus+ joint CBHE MODEST project. The results show that the best European practices include Doctoral Training Centers as a new model of doctoral education management. Creating such centers at Russian universities could improve international networking cooperation, quality assurance, collaboration with non-academic sector, and development of doctoral students’ soft skills, namely, leadership, teamwork, academic writing, etc. Further research could support the set-up of regulatory documents and development of teaching and learning materials for such centers.
