EU Cultural Diversity and Unity from Students’ Perspective

15.10.2020

This year, the course on “EU Entrepreneurship Values: Cultural Diversity and Unity” started from learning the basics of the European Union, including the key dates in the history of European integration.

“United in Diversity”, the motto of the European Union, inspired the students to investigate into the similarities and differences between the EU member states, and to compare them to their native culture. G. Hofstede findings and Culture Compass™ resources made them more aware of cultural challenges and opportunities to take advantage of them.

One of the classes focused on the six cultural dimensions, including power distance index, individualism vs. collectivism, uncertainty avoidance index, masculinity vs. femininity, long-term orientation vs. short-term orientation, and indulgence vs. restraint. Using the Culture Compass™ , the students selected one or several EU countries and analyzed the cultural dimensions indices. In group, they discussed possible barriers in business communication due to cultural differences and measures to prevent misunderstanding.

During classes, the students are involved in different discussions, and the topics to follow are corporate social responsibility, new skills for new jobs and efficiency of health care systems in EU countries.
