The Department was established in 1982 for the provision of microbiological plants with experts. The first Department chairs were Doctor of Science, Full Professor D. Pobedimsky (1982-1991) and Doctor of Science, Full Professor V. Gamayurova (1991-2004). Since 2004 the Department has been chaired by Doctor of Science, the Member of Russian Microbiological Society Professor Alexander S. Sirotkin. 19 Ph.D. (Candidate) dissertations and 4 doctoral theses have been defended at the Department.

Academics

Since its foundation, over 1000 chemical engineers have been trained at this department, in Specialist Degree program “Biotechnology”. They work at the enterprises where food, medical and ecological biotechnologies are used.

The specialists are trained in 2 majors:

  • Biotechnology (Ecobiotechnology), a specific application of biotechnology for the solution of environmental problems and restoration of its natural resources;
  • Bioconversion of Vegetable Raw Materials, deep processing of renewed raw materials for fodder and foodstuff production by using biotechnological methods. It’s also used for medical and other biological products (sweet syrup, barmy biomass, bread, dairy raw materials, lactic bacteria and products, enzymes, antibiotics).

Forms of training are full-time (5 years) and part-time (6 years).

The Department offers Ph.D. Degree programs and Postdoctoral positions.

Research

The Department has scientific directions in the areas of industrial, agricultural and ecological biotechnology, namely:

  • bioconversion of basic vegetative raw materials and wastes of wood processing and agricultural enterprises for the manufacture of valuable food and industrial products (food and fuel ethanol, biodiesel , dairy products, glucose concentrate, enzyme preparations, biogas);
  • production of veterinary antibiotics of the prolonged forms;
  • biodecontamination and recycling of wastes from industrial and municipal enterprises;
  • bioindication of environmental contaminations, monitoring;
  • intensification of primary processing of dairy products with preservation of their high biological activity.

The Industrial Biotechnology Department collaborates with such industrial enterprises as “Orgsyntez” (www.orgsyntez.ru), Kazan synthetic rubber plant (www.russia-rubber.com), Krasnyi vostok (www.efesrussia.ru, www.efesglobal.com), Tatspirtprom (www.tatspirtprom.ru) and others.

It also has contacts with such Research Institutes as Kazan Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics (www.kibb.knc.ru), Kazan Institute of organic and physical chemistry (www.iopc.knc.ru), D. Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (www.muctr.ru), Karlsruhe Universitat in Germany (www.uni-versity.info/Karlsruhe) and others.
