KNRTU's experience in the field of biotechnology sparks interest of Cuban colleagues

On March 19, Gustavo Cobreiro Suarez, Advisor for Education and Culture of the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Russia, visited KNRTU and met with the University's officials and Cuban students. During the visit, the parties discussed promising areas of joint research projects.

The meeting began with a presentation of KNRTU. Alexey Burmistrov, Vice-rector for Academic Affairs, spoke about the University's educational programs and research studies, faculty and career opportunities for graduates. The guest highly appreciated University's focusing on training high-skilled engineers in a variety of majors.

The meeting was also attended by three students from Cuba: third-year student Asea Villa Inima (Faculty of Nanomaterials and Nanotechnologies), first-year students Padilla Duarte Jorge Ruben (Faculty of International Educational Programs) and Tatiana Kurilova (Faculty of Chemistry and Polymer Technology in Medicine and Cosmetics). They receive higher education in Kazan within the framework of an intergovernmental agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Cuba.

The Adviser found out what conditions were provided to students in the dormitory and how the educational process is going. Thus, Asea Villa Inima spoke about the work placement at one of the textile enterprises of Tatarstan. She praised the modern equipment in production. She is currently writing a course work basing on her practice with this equipment and is ready to apply the findings at the Cuban enterprise in the future.

The visit continued in the office of the rector Sergey Yushko. Gustavo Cobreiro Suarez expressed the interest of the Cuban government in networking with Russia. Today, 300 students from Cuba study in Russia. In addition, Cuba has good relations with scientists from different countries, which helps to develop new ties between scientific communities.

Sergey Yushko noted : "Today, problems of developing new materials and new properties for well-known materials come to the fore. The interaction with leading Russian enterprises allowed our University to acquire various technological processes. And our graduates become valuable specialists with the necessary skills and knowledge."

The rector expressed his intention to expand the number of Cuban students and implement academic exchange programs, and create joint research groups. Mutual interest has emerged in the field of biotechnologies, nanomaterials and design.

Gustavo Cobreiro Suarez graduated from the Russian University of Transport (MIIT). From 1986 to 2003, he was Vice-rector, and from 2003 to 2009, he was the Head of the Technological University of Havana José Antonio Echeverría. He held the position as the Rector of the University of Havana from 2009 to 2018. Since 2019, he takes the position of Advisor for Education and Culture at the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Russia.
