On September 8, the documentary film "Tatara - The Legacy of Eurasia", written and conceptualized by KNRTU Associate Professor of the Department of Physics, Asiya Sadykova, was screened at the "Rodina" cinema as part of the program for the Kazan International Film Festival "Altyn Minbar". After being reviewed by international experts, the film made it into the festival’s shortlist.

The film chronicles is the creation of the projection show "Tatara - The Legacy of Eurasia", which was dedicated to a special steel-smelting technology for samurai swords known as "Tatara." According to Japanese researchers, this technology, originating from the Turkic tribes—ancient Tatars—was brought to Japan from the mainland, with its roots traced back to the territory of modern-day Russia. The film also explores the idea behind the joint Tatarstan-Japan cultural project, which features an integrated storyline based on the legends of Eurasian peoples.

“Historical data shows that this unique metallurgical technology, ‘Tatara,’ which originated among the ancient Turkic Tatars, was brought to Japan through migration processes, though the exact route remains unknown. The Japanese perfected this technology, which now survives in only one prefecture in Japan. However, the Japanese are unaware of the etymology of the term or the history of how this technology reached their country,” explains Asiya Yusupovna.

This cultural project sheds light on the mysterious history of the "Tatara" technology.

“The Russian version of the documentary was presented at the festival, which we initially premiered in May 2023 at the “Mir” cinema. The Japanese version was handed over to the Deputy Mayor of Tokyo, who, during his time as head of the embassy's information department, facilitated the allocation of Japanese funding for this project,” adds Asiya Sadykova.

The project and the film were created with the support of the Rais of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, the International Shodiev Foundation, and the Japanese Embassy.
