The Department was established in 1989 on the basis of the former Department of Energy Intensive Compounds merged with the team which ran the program in “Recuperation of Recycled Industrial Materials”. Its foundation was the result of urgent need in environmental engineers for mechanical engineering sector of industry.

The idea of environmental protection is of primary importance at the Department today.

Academics

The Department runs Bachelor’s, Specialist and Master’s Degree programs in “Environmental Protection and Rational Use of Natural Resources” and “Engineering Environmental Protection”, both of full-time course of study. The Department also runs additional educational program in “Environmental Protection”, intended to enhance the study of environmental engineer’s activity. Individual and team programs are offered.

Research

In general, the research at the Department aims at developing the theory and technology of technogenic safety and recovery of the environment, with particular problems being solved:

• chemical reclamation of post-consumer products (conventional studies);
• waste water ozonation in electrochemical industry;
• formulation of corrosion inhibitors and biocides based on products to be reclaimed;
• waste minimization in the sources of waste.
