The Department was established in 1933. The study about Processes and Machinery in Chemical Engineering originated simultaneously in Soviet Union, USA and Great Britain as the “Principles of Chemical Engineering”. Kazan scientific school of “Processes and Machinery in Chemical Engineering” started its developing in 1930s. Fast growing chemical, electric-power and other branches of industry demanded qualified professionals at that time. Associate Professor V.P. Vinogradov was the first Department chairman. In 1938 the Department became an independent subdivision of Kazan Chemical Technological University (previously Kazan National Research Technological University was named Kazan Chemical Technological University - KCTU). It was headed by N.P. Voskoboynikov, rector of the KCTU.
Famous scientists headed the Department: A.I. Lunyak, A.A. Sveshnikov, R.G. Frindlender, A.A. Trufanov, O.V. Maminov, S.G. Diakonov (rector of KCTU from 1989 to 2007), G.S. Diakonov (rector of KCTU since 2007).
In 1973 the Department moved to a new building with new laboratories to carry out practical and research work. In 2013, the laboratory “Heat- and Mass-Transfer Model Sets” was named after Professor O.V. Maminov, who made a great contribution to the laboratories construction.
The Department of Chemical Process Engineering and the Department of Hydraulics were joined into one department. As a result, the Faculty counts more than 40 highly experienced lecturers.

Academics
The Department trains Specialist and Master Degree Students:
- “Design of Production Machines and Complexes” (“Design of Production Complexes for Chemical and Petrochemical Industry”) is developed in keeping with the best traditions of engineers training. Students attend classes at the modern laboratories, established in cooperation with Engineering Promotional Center «Inzhekhim», including laboratories of heat – and mass-transfer, catalytic, membrane processes and devices. Research Educational Center was opened at the EPC «Inzhekhim».
- “Chemical Technology” (“Chemical Engineering for Innovative Entrepreneurship”) is available for Master Degree Students and has an EUR-ACE quality label. It means that this academic program was accredited by European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education authorized agency in Russia and included into the European register of accredited engineering degree programs that meet the standards and are recognized in 14 European countries. Graduates are also included into the European database, thus, they enhance their employment opportunity. International professional qualification European Engineer can be also granted to the graduates. The first Masters graduated this program on July 31, 2013.

The Department provides classes to students in:
- Hydraulics;
- Liquid Mechanics;
- Heat Engineering;
- Chemical Process Engineering;
- Energy and Mass Transfer, etc.

Research on the Department covers the following areas:

- Description, design and renovation of industrial equipment with the method of joint physical and mathematical simulation;
- Simulation of hydrodynamics and interrelated heat and mass transfer processes in turbulent flows with computational hydrodynamics methods;
- Experimental research of multiphase flows hydrodynamics with optical methods;
- Molecular-statistical methods for the analysis of physicochemical characteristics of multicomponent liquid and gas mixtures and phase equilibrium conditions;
- Experimental and theoretical research of heat and mass transfer processes at the contact devices in mass-transfer units;
- Experimental and theoretical research of the membrane processes;
- Fine-tuning of technology of chemical synthesis on the pilot units;
- Mathematical simulation of the synthetic rubber production processes;
- Development, optimal design and renovation of separation units in the chemical industry;
- Ionic liquids, its properties and application in industry.
