History

The Department was established in 1934. The first Head of the Department was German K. Dyakonov, who made a great contribution in developing the theory of similarity of physicochemical transformations. The Department developed educational programs for engineers for different field of fast-growing industry. These courses become independent departments of the Institute.
Since 1934 the Faculty of the Department has obtained 15 Doctor of Science and 94 PhD degrees. Graduates and postgraduates became famous researchers, directors of educational institutions, research institutes, among them 2 Rectors, 5 Vice Rectors, 6 Deans, and 15 Heads of departments.

Academics

The Department runs Bachelor Degree and Master Degree programs “Heat-Power Engineering and Heating Engineering”. Bachelors are specialized in “Heat Energy Technology” and Masters are specialized in “Organization and Management of Innovations in Heat Power Engineering”.
The Department gives general scientific and professional courses:
- Technical Thermodynamics;
- Heat Transfer;
- Heat and Mass Transfer;
- Heat Engineering and, etc.

Practicum is carried out in one of three laboratories: Laboratory of Thermodynamics, Laboratory of Heat Transfer, and Laboratory of Heat Technology.

Laboratory studies in frameworks of the discipline “Basics of Supercritical Fluid Technologies” are carried out on the experimental setup that performs extraction processes, transesterification reactions, and dispersion at circulation and static regimes.

Research

Research areas include:
- Phase equilibrium characteristics for binary systems;
- Supercritical fluid state of matter;
- Thermophysical properties of single- and multicomponent systems under the various conditions;
- Phase equilibrium under high pressure conditions, including near critical region for binary and ternary systems such as “liquid - supercritical fluid”, “solid - supercritical fluid”, “polymer - supercritical fluid”;
- Energy saving technologies for chemical production;
- Supercritical technologies;
- Physical and mathematical simulation of oil displacement by supercritical carbon dioxide;
- Production of biodiesel fuels by the reaction in supercritical fluids;
- Synthesis, reactivation and recycling of catalysts in supercritical fluids;
- Obtaining of nanodispersions by the RESS and SAS methods;
- Supercritical water oxidation as a mean to solve ecological problems.

Research is carried out with support of Tatarstan Academy of Science, Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Russian Foundation of Fundamental Research and also in cooperation with foreign universities and research institutions, including The National Center for Scientific Research in France and US National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Innovative technologies involving supercritical fluids are patented.

Development

Supercritical fluid technologies are believed to be perspective because it can be used as environmentally friendly and energy-efficient technology in food and chemical industry. The Department will be able to fill the need in specialists in this sphere.
