The course “Vacuum Engineering” was created by Full Professor A. Usmanov and Associate Professor K. Panfilovich on the Department of Heat Engineering.

The Department of Vacuum Engineering was established in 1985. The first Chair was Gabdelnur Mukhametzanov, Full Professor, Doctor of Engineering, winner of awards, namely, Honor Award in Science and Technology of the Republic of Tatarstan, Honor Award in Higher Education of the Russian Federation.

Since 2001 the department has been chaired by Full Professor Valery A. Alyayev, Doctor of Engineering, and Vice Rector for Economic Affairs and Innovations, Director of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering for Chemical and Petrochemical Industry.

1200 students graduated the department. Alimni successfully apply their knowledge in electronics, space, and food industry, production of protective-decorative coating. The department opened the branch in cooperation with JSC “Vacuummash”, Russian leader in vacuum equipment production.

Academics

The Department trains Bachelor students in “Vacuum and Compressor Equipment of Physical Machines”, and Master students in “Design and Operation of Vacuum Technological Equipment”.

The Faculty of the department includes 5 Full Professors, Doctors of Science, 11 Associate Professors, and PhDs.

The department gives courses in the following disciplines:
- Vacuum Physics;
- Rotor Vacuum Pumps;
- Piston Vacuum Pumps;
- Vacuum Technologies;
- Vacuum Units;
- Design of Pieces of Vacuum Equipment, and etc.

Research areas:

1. Vacuum generation technique. Design of vacuum systems;
2. Optical, radiative and transport properties of substances under high pressure;
3. Technology and equipment of coating;
4. Thermodynamic and thermophysical properties of gases and liquids under high order state parameters including near critical region;
5. Thermodynamic, thermophysical and transport properties of substances;
6. Electrophysical methods of metal processing for vacuum equipment. Increase of wear resistance of cutting tools.

Faculty of the department published 16 manuscripts, 10 textbooks and about 300 research papers in Russian and foreign journals during last 15 years.

The department is well-equipped to carry out practicum. Laboratory facilities include pumping equipment, measurement instruments, and vacuum units that are used for coating witg magnetron method and evaporation method.

In 2013, the department in cooperation with JSC “Vacuummash” received a state grant to implement the project “Development of HighTechnology Production of Dry Spiral Vacuum Pumps”. As a result the first Russian production of high-efficiency dry spiral vacuum pumps will be opened on the “Vacuummash”.
