The Department of Wood Chemical Technology was established on March 5, 2008 according to the decision of Academic Board of the University. Opened at the same year, academic program “Chemical Technology of Wood Processing” embodies disciplines and studies about technologies and products of value-added wood processing. Enhancement at this field is linked with a rich history of Kazan chemical school and famous chemist Boris Arbuzov.

In 1925, Boris Arbuzov studied a possibility of industrial processing of pine resin collected at forests around Kazan. He also investigated the composition of resin acids obtained from Scots Pines. The further development of timber processing as well as training of specialists in this field have been carried out at Yoshkar-Ola since 1927.

At the same time, wood biomass, its components and derivative products were studied at various departments of KNRTU that emphasizes an importance of these research issues. In 1995, KNRTU started training engineers in Wood Processing Technology and Machinery of Timber Complex at new Department of Wood Processing. The first students were enrolled in a course “Chemical Technology of Wood Processing” in 2009 at the Department of Chemical Technology of Wood. Since its foundation, the department has been chaired by Professor Vladimir Bashkirov, Doctor in Engineering.

Academics
Academic and research activities of two departments were closely connected during the first years after the separation of the Department of Chemical Technology of Wood from the Department of Wood Processing. Faculty continued working on both departments. With the improving of training process and academic curriculum the Department became an independent subdivision with first-rate faculty that includes 2 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors, 3 Instructors, engineer, laboratory assistant, and 6 PhD students.

The department provides the following academic programs:
- Chemical Technology of Wood Processing (Bachelor degree students);
- Technology of Chemical Wood Processing (specialist Degree students);
- Chemical Processing of Wood into Organic Substances and Fuel (Master Degree students);
- Technology and Equipment of Biomass Chemical Processing into Polymer materials and Other Products (Master Degree students);
- Technology and Equipment of Biomass Chemical Processing; Wood Chemistry (PhD students).

Research at the department covers a wide range of problems:
- Biomass complex processing with conversation into fuel, materials and chemical products;
- Thermo chemical processing of organic raw materials;
- Biomass conversation into electrical and heat energy;
- Obtaining of biofuel and chemical products;
- Development of the urethane foams production with the use of liquid wood pyrolysis products;
- Technology of binder based on liquid wood pyrolysis products for road construction;
- Petrochemical methods for extraction of valuable components from liquid products of wood thermochemical decomposition.
