History
The Department of Technology of Metals was established in 1938. The first department chair was Associate Professor K.D. Borodulin. Pavel D. Gavrilov was the department chair from 1949 to 1970. He made the great contribution to the development of the department: new laboratories were equipped with modern devices for the materials study the number of faculty was increased, and new lecture courses were composed for students.
The department started close cooperation with manufacturing plants. V.A. Kupriyanov was the department chair from 1970 to 1980. At that time, the department moved to another building that opened new opportunities for education and research. In 1981, the department was renamed as the Department of Engineering Materials. The laboratory facility was developing extensively under the leadership of Faat A. Garifullin. He was the department chair from 1980 to 2010. Practical and research work was carried out with numerical control machines and industrial robots.
Full Professor Guzel A. Aminova, Doctor of Engineering, has been the department chair since 2010. The department offers now new Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree programs. Two new laboratories were created: the laboratory of analysis and development of technologies and the laboratory of processing of gemstones and precious metals. Nowadays, 3 Doctors of Science and 3 PhDs work at the department.

Academics
The department provides courses in Material Science, Technology of Engineering Materials.
The department runs the following Bachelor Degree Programs:
- Technology of Art Processing of Materials;
- Material Science and Materials Engineering for Petrochemical Industry (Master Degree Program is also available);
- System Analysis and Management of Chemical Technologies.
Research areas:
- Mathematical simulation of manufacturing processes of synthetic rubbers and other polymers;
- New production technologies for precious metals;
- Prediction of materials properties by chemical and mathematical analysis.
The department and the leading polymer manufacturing plant OJSC “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” signed the research-and-development contract. The research group developed the scientific basis for calculation and mathematical models of interdependent heat and mass transfer processes at the production of butadiene rubbers over a cobalt- or nickel-containing catalytic systems. Department scientists are granted with funding by Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, Russian Foundation for Basic Research, and the President of the Russian Federation.
