The Department of Plastics Technology was established by Professor Evgeny Kuznetsov in 1958. He made a great impact on the research and training process at the department that makes it a leader in preparing specialists in technology and processing of plastics. First chemical engineers graduated from the department in 1959 with the major “Chemical Technology of Plastics”. The department was growing fast and the total number of faculty members and support stuff numbers more than 140 in 1970s.

The Department of Plastics Processing Technology was separated from the Department of Plastics Technology in 1975 under the leadership of Professor Bоgdanov (at present it is the Department of Processing Technology of Polymers and Composite Materials);

The Department of Graphic Arts Technology and Filming/Photography Materials was separated from the Department of Plastics Technology in 2004.

The department trains specialists for chemical industry who successfully apply their knowledge and skills in polymers processing, development of new synthesis processes and polymer materials properties analysis.

The department runs the Bachelor Degree program in Chemical Technology and the following Master Degree programs:
- Chemical Technology of High Molecular Weight Compounds;
- Chemical Technology of Plastics;
- Chemistry and Technology of Polymer Films and Artificial Leather;
- Innovative Entrepreneurship in Plastics Technology.

The department offers individual courses for specialists who work at particular companies and plants or develop advanced technologies of polymers production and processing.

The department provides courses in the following disciplines:
- Chemistry of Monomers;
- Chemistry and Physics of Polymers;
- Modification of Polymers;
- Chemical Technology of Plastics;
- Processing Technology of Plastics;
- Polymer Composite Materials;
- Equipment of Plastics Production, and etc.

Research

The research at the department covers a wide range of problems including the following:
- Principles of modification of polyolefines structure and properties, their application for specific purpose materials preparation;
- Development of polyepoxides synthesis technology, modification of their structure and properties;
- Principles of structure and properties modification of polyolefines with acrylic polymers and blocked isocyanates, development of efficient methods of corrosion protection for metals;
- Principles of structure formation and enhancement of properties in filled heterogeneous polymer compositions and preparation of polymer composite materials on their basis;
- Synthesis and modification of structure and properties of copolymers obtained from acrylic monomers;
- Development of composite materials comprising formaldehyde oligomers with phenol, acetone and carbamide fragments;
- Study of modification, structure and properties of copolymers containing ethylene, their compositions with organo-silicon and hyperbranched polymers.

The research results are implemented to solve the following applied problems:
- Improving service parameters of polyolefines and polyepoxides through a chemical modification;
- Development of electrically conductive and antistatic polyolefines compositions with enhanced service parameters;
- Development of corrosion protective coatings comprising polyolefines and copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate;
- Development of water-soluble polyelectrolytes with improved flocculation characteristics;
- Development of thermosetting oligomer compositions for waterproofing of oil-bearing bed as well as for the production of fire retardant heat insulating foams, chemical resistant coatings and heat resistant engineering materials.
