The Laboratory of Physical Chemistry was established in the Kazan University in 1896. In 1930, all chemical departments moved to the new Kazan Chemical Technological University. The first department chair was Full Professor Alexey Gerasimov, Doctor of Chemistry, winner of the Honor Award in Science and Engineering of the Republic of Tatarstan. In 1930-1940 the research was focused on the electrochemistry of colloid systems.

Departments of Leningrad Technological University moved to Kazan and joined Kazan Chemical Technological Institute during the Great Patriotic War in 1941-1945. The Department of Colloid Chemistry headed by Full Professor Kurbatov was among them.

In 1953-1965, the Department Chair was Full Professor Sergey Kochergin, Doctor of Chemistry, winner of the Honor Award in Science and Engineering of the Republic of Tatarstan. At that time the research areas were extended and included electrical deposition, the structure of electric double layer, physicochemical properties of polyelectrolyte solutions, and etc. The number of faculty increased and new laboratories were opened.

In 1965-1977, Full Professor Valentin Nikulin, Doctor of Chemistry, winner of the Honor Award in Science and Engineering of the Republic of Tatarstan, was the Department Chair. The research carried out at the department became the basis for the electro catalysis study.

In 1977-1990, the Department Chair was Full Professor German Dobrenkov, Doctor of Chemistry, a winner of the Honor Award in Science and Engineering of the Republic of Tatarstan. At that time research was focused on the electrochemical kinetics and interface effects of the organic substances.

In 1991-2005 William Barabanov was a chair of joint Department of Physical and Colloid Chemistry. Full Professor William Barabanov is a Doctor of Chemistry and a winner of the top awards (Honor Award in Science and Engineering of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Russian Federation), and corresponding member of the Tatarstan Academy of Science. The main research area included thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanism of chemical reactions in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. In 2000, the new academic program “Technology of Cosmetic Products” was launched.

Full Professor Yuriy Galyametdinov, Doctor of Chemistry and the winner of Federal Award in Science and Engineering has been chaired the department since 2005. At the last years, the research was focused on nanochemistry and nanotechnology as well as on quantum-chemical calculations of complex polyatomic systems. The branch of the department was opened at the Kazan Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2014, the program “Technology of Cosmetic Products” gave the birth to an independent Department of Technology of Cosmetic Products.

Academics:

92 PhD theses and 8 Doctoral theses were defended on the department since 1930.

The department provides courses in the following disciplines:
- Physical Chemistry;
- Colloid Chemistry;
- Chemistry and Material Science;
- Theoretical and Experimental Research Methods in Chemistry, and etc.

The department runs the Master Degree program “Physicochemical Basics of Innovative Technologies of Supramolecular Systems”. Students study unique courses such as “Introduction to Supramolecular Chemistry”, “Polymers and Liquid Crystals in Optomolecular Electronics”, “Introduction to the Technology of Polymer Membranes”, “Physicochemical Basics of nanotechnologies”, and etc.

Research

The main research area is preparation and study of supramolecular and dispersed systems based on liquid crystals, polymer electrolytes and surfactants.
The department is involved into the local and federal research programs. Papers are published in cooperation with foreign partners and have high impact-factor.

Development:

The department faculty extends the block of optional disciplines with new ones and prepares textbooks in English.
