As a result of large-scale synthetic rubber production appeared in the Soviet Union in 1930s, the Department was established in 1932 by world-known scientist Professor A. Arbuzov. The Department trains specialists in petrochemical monomer synthesis, preparation of tailor-made rubbers, process engineering and examination of elastomer properties.

Academics

The Department runs Bachelor’s, Specialist and Master’s Degree programs in “Innovations Management”, “Chemical Technology of High Molecular Weight Compounds”, “Processing Technology of Plastics and Elastomers”.

Chemical Technology of High Molecular Weight Compounds” Specialist Degree students major in “Technology of Synthetic Rubber” and “Catalyst-based Technologies in Polymer Chemistry”.

Full-time and/or evening courses of study are available depending on a program.

Ph.D. Degree and post-doctoral programs are also offered.

The Department initiated new academic trend of training double competence specialists: Managing Engineer Degree students and Engineer-Translator Degree students.

Research

Basic research programs at the Department were initiated by Professor P. Kirpichnikov, the Chair of the Department over a period of 26 years. To his memory, the annual conference “Readings from Kirpichnikov” has been run since 2000.

Up-to-date research aims at creating fundamentals and efficient technologies for polymer chemistry and petrochemistry:

  • polymer stabilization and modification;
  • new syntheses of industrial oligomers;
  • polyurethane studies, including waste recycling;
  • catalysis studies.
For implementation of profitable research projects, the Elastomer Development Center was organized at the Department in 1989 under the leadership of Professor A. Lyakumovich. Cooperative research, in collaboration with the Samsung Group since 2000 in particular, is of special mention.

Due to stable links with leading petrochemical and synthetic rubber enterprises, the graduates are recruited by “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” OJSC , “Nizhnekamskshina” OJSC , and “Kazan Synthetic Rubber Plant” OJSC .
